CHAPTER 29

CONNIVANCE

The long-distance telephone operator in the exchange at Marly was approaching the French-Canadian equivalent of an American dither. The Hotel Therese had begun, astonishingly enough, to bristle with calls for the States.

Following the pleasant (if strained) young man’s voice from Room 117 had come a woman’s voice from Room 139 asking tensely for a connection with a certain hotel in Burlington, Vermont. After some trouble, and a bit of back-chat on the part of a sleepy room clerk, the connection was effected.

Linda said: “Walter?”

A man’s voice from a room in the certain hotel in Burlington said: “Who’s talking?”

“Linda.”

“Oh.”

“Walter?”

“Yes.”

“Listen, honey—”

“Speak louder, can’t you?”

“I don’t dare, Walter—listen—can you hear me now?”

“Where are you?”

“In some dump in Marly.”

“What the hell are you there for?”

“The house burned down.”

“What?”

“It burned down tonight. We drove up here and are staying at the Hotel Therese.”

“The hotel what?”

“Therese—T-h—something—listen,—honey, we’re coming through sometime after lunch.”

“You gotta speak louder. What was that about lunch?”

“Damn lunch! I say we’re coming through after it.”

“I get you. What was that about the house?”

“It burned down. That’s why we’re here.”

“Where?”

“The Hotel Therese!”

“All right. Don’t shout.”

“You know the arrangements we made in New York?”

“Yes.”

“Did you fix it?”

“I fixed it.”

“How fast, honey?”

“Plenty. How’s things, baby?”

“Smooth—good and smooth. You better start things moving right after lunch. Say—just where is this Burlington, anyway?”

“It’s across the lake from Plattsburg—maybe thirty or forty miles from Rouses Point. Something like that.”

“Well—you’ll watch your step, honey?”

“I’ll watch it, baby.” The voice on the Burlington end of the wire grew very cold, very hard, as it added: “And I’ll watch yours too.”
